Garden Notes - Basic Rose Gardening Tools

To be successful at rose gardening you must first acquire the right set of gardening tools.  Before working in your garden make sure that you have these tools available.

Pruner
This tool will be used almost daily in a rose garden.  There are different types of pruners on the market today.  The most common are the anvil pruner, and the bypass pruner.  The anvil pruner has blades that meet on top of one another.  The bypass pruner is comparable to a pair of scissors; the blades pass each other the same way scissors do.  In rose gardening it is important to always use bypass pruners so the canes and stems of the plant are not crushed.

Loppers
This tool is used in rose gardening to cut back old thick canes that pruners will be unable to cut. Those just beginning a rose garden this tool will not be necessary for a few years.

Long-Handled Shovel
This shovel should be light weight and have a sturdy handle.  Shovels with a fiberglass throat are a suitable choice.  It is also advisable to buy a shovel with a padded handle to keep from harming your hands while working with the shovel.

Wheelbarrow
Wheelbarrows used for rose gardening should be strong and able to haul a large amount of debris.  It is not a good idea to buy a gardening cart for use in a rose garden.  When working in a rose garden you will need to remove a lot of debris some of which may be heavy and it is pertinent to have a strong wheelbarrow for use in cases such as this.

Gloves

"You can complain because a rose has thorns, or you can rejoice because thorns have a rose." - Tom Wilson

A rose garden is not a place for thin or fabric gloves.  Leather gardening gloves with fold down cuffs work best for rose gardening because the thorns of the plant will not be able to penetrate the leather.

Kneeling Pads
Some people prefer large kneeling pads with handles, while others prefer strap on knee pads.  As long as you have something to kneel on either type will work well, however the strap on pads are more convenient because you do not have to carry them around with you.

Short Gardening Digging Fork
This tool is very important for use in turning and loosening small patches of soil.  It is important to choose a digging fork with steel forks and a sturdy handle.

Watering wand
This tool is excellent to have to water any plants whether potted or planted in the ground.  This tool should have brass fittings rather than plastic as they will last much longer.  It should also have a shut off valve on the wand itself and also a quick release fitting where it attaches to the hose.

Garden Rake
This tool should have strong steel tines and a sturdy handle.  It will be used to level and smooth the soil in the garden.

Leaf Rake
This tool is used to clean up leaves, clippings and other garden debris.  It is advisable to buy both a large or normal sized leaf rake, and also a “child sized” leaf rake to clean items from areas where there is not much room.

These tools can be found in a number of places such as department stores, gardening centers and even yard sales if you don’t mind buying used items.
