Gypsophila Elegans
A hardy annual plant largely grown for
cutting. Propagated by seed sown in the open
garden in spring. This sowing is essential.
Will thrive in almost any soil that has been moderately
well enriched. Cultivated very extensively in
France, whence the flowers are sent to English market
early in the year. There is a rose-colored variety
known as rosea. Height 1 ft. to 18 inches. |

Virginian Stock
A hardy annual flower largely used for edging pathways.
Propagated by seeds, which may be sown in autumn or
spring. Usually sown much too thickly. Will grow in any
good garden soil, but if sown in autumn does best in
rather light well drained spots. May be had in separate
or mixed colors. Not of much use for cutting. Height 6
inches to 1 foot.

Oleander
A beautiful greenhouse shrub which may be stood outdoors
during the summer and early autumn months. Propagated by
cuttings rooted in sand and or bell glasses, or in
bottles of water. Soil, good loam with a little peat and
manure added; this must be made firm. A very poisonous
plant-a fact that is not generally known. Height 5 ft to
15 ft.

St. John's
Wort
A very dwarf hardy shrub, sometimes called the Rose of
Sharon. Propagated by cuttings rooted in a frame in
early summer, or pieces with roots adhering may
sometimes be slipped off the old plants. Very useful for
growing under trees where grass will not thrive. Will do
well in very poor soil. May be naturalized for cover for
game. Height 1 foot to 15 inches.

Snowdrop
A well-known perennial bulbous plant, of which there are
several varieties. Propagated by offsets from the bulbs
and by seed sown as soon as ripe. The bulbs should be
planted during August or September. Excellent for
naturalizing in grass and woodland. Will thrive in
almost any well drained soil. May be grown in pots for
the greenhouse. Height 6 inches.
