Columbine

A hardy perennial plant that is admirably adapted for borders or large beds. Propagated by division of the old plants in early spring, or by seeds sown under glass in February or in the open garden in July. Will thrive, in any good garden soil. Height a feet. There are a number of hybrid forms with long spurred flowers which are very beautiful.

Double Daisy

The Daisies of gardens are double forms of the Wild Daisy, a dwarf perennial plant that is quite hardy. Propagated by seed sown in the open garden in June, or by division of the old plants as soon as they have finished flowering. Useful for edgings or for planting between tulips or Daffodils in beds. Likes rather damp soil.

The Blue-Flowered Sage

A hardy herbaceous perennial plant useful for borders on account of its blue flowers. Propagated by division in spring. Does best in a rather light warm soil that has been well manured. There is a larger flowered variety known as grandiflora, which is often used as a greenhouse plant for the winter. Height 6 ft.

Perennial Lupin

A hardy perennial herbaceous plant that is very useful for planting in borders. Propagated by division in early spring, or by seeds sown in the open in May. Likes a deeply cultivated and well enriched soil, with frequent mulching of manure. The foliage is very ornamental. Not a good flower for cutting, as the blossoms drop quickly. Height a foot to 4 ft.

Perennial Flax

A hardy perennial plant that is greatly prized for its blue flowers. Propagated by seeds sown in pots in a frame in spring, or by division in spring. Will thrive in the poorest soil, and for that reason is specially useful for gardens where the soil is sandy. It is, however, benefited by manure. There is a variety with white flowers. Height 1 foot to 15 inches.
