Garden Notes - Miniature Roses

Perfect Accent Flowers

Miniature roses are easily maintained indoors or outdoors.  Gardeners often frown on this variety because they give off very little or no fragrance, however they are a perfect accent to home or garden.  They are nearly maintenance-free and require a “bath” once a week.  With proper maintenance they will last many years.

Miniature Roses are commonly misconceived as the perfect houseplant.  Before relocating this variety indoors it is important to know that they can grow up to four feet tall.  They also need an ample amount of lighting to grow properly.   A similar variety called a micro-mini roses grow approximately 5 inches tall and are easily maintained like miniature roses.  There are several tips below that will make caring for your indoor miniature roses a relatively easy task.

These flowers are best suited to direct sunlight and grow quite well when put in the sunniest location of the house.  A plant of this variety that is starving for light will have stems that appear to be stretched leaving wide gaps between the leaves.  To cure this problem it is best to move the plant to a more sunny location or provide the plant with artificial light or a sun lamp.  Your plant should be bathed weekly by using a spray bottle of water.  This will help reduce the risk of spider-mite infestation.  The plant’s leaves should be gently sprayed on both top and bottom; this will also remove any dust on the plant.  Be certain that the pot the plant is residing in is large enough for the plant.  If the pot is too small the plant will not grow properly.

Miniature roses bloom throughout the growing season if left outdoors.  Covering the plant with mulch will ensure that it has a significant chance or surviving winter.  The plants can be put directly into the ground; into a hanging basket, or even an 8-10 inch pot.  The plant needs to be in an area where no other larger objects will cast a shadow over it as it thrives best in direct sunlight.

If planting this variety in the ground the hole needs to be approximately one foot in depth and width both.  Remove the rose from its packaging or pot, gently untangle the roots and place them into the hole.  Fill the hole with loose soil and be certain the rose is planted level.  Water the plant thoroughly.  These rules apply to potting the plant also.

The soil surrounding the plant should not be allowed to dry out.  The first three weeks are the most crucial to the plants health so the plant must be watered every day for this period.  After this period is over keep the soil moist by checking it on a daily basis and watering it if needed.

Miniature roses will look great both indoors and out in any location than needs a bit of color.
